A turning point for human enterprise
The COP21 negotiations in Paris last week mark a new era of business consciousness. German climate scientist, Joachim Schellnhuber aptly remarks, “This is a turning point in the human enterprise, where the great transformation towards sustainability begins.”
The deal: for all nations to achieve carbon neutrality by 2030 or 2050, poses a design challenge for governments, busiensses and organizations to restructure the way they do and think about business. Much of this challenge will fall to businesses and investors, who will now operate under more ambitious emissions-reduction policies that countries pledge to put into effect by 2020. This landmark deal marks the first time in the past 50 years that countries have agreed that climate change is a global threat, and to take collective action to squeeze emissions out of the world economy. How this will be done will require experimentation, innovation and a whole new business consciousness.
